Ornery Women: Two Stories from the Mountains

“Sisters of the Mother Forest” (Alice Jones) &
“Jean Ritchie: Damsel with a Dulcimer” (Rachel Rogers)
Join us for one great night of theater featuring two one-woman one-act stories of real-life ornery women in eastern Kentucky. EKU’s Dr. Alice Jones in “Sisters of the Mother Forest,” which tells the story of Annette and Lucy Braun—the first and second women to earn PhDs at the University of Cincinnati and how a 1940 botanical research trip to Pine Mountain propelled the two scientist sisters into the fight to save the virgin forest of eastern Kentucky.
Rachel Rogers steps in as “Damsel with a Dulcimer” Jean Ritchie—the Viper, Kentucky native whose long and prolific singing and songwriting career helped launch the nation-wide folk music revival of the 50s and 60s. Sponsored by EKU’s Appalachian Studies and Theatre Programs, and supported in part by the Kentucky Humanities Council.
