CHAUTAUQUA Special Event: Filmmaker Sally Rubin: "Hillbilly, the Documentary," Tonight at 7:30PM

EKU Chautauqua presents filmmaker Sally Rubin: "Hillbilly*, the Documentary: 100 Years of Appalachia in TV and Film," tonight, Thurs. Oct. 5 at 7:30 PM in O'Donnell Hall, in an Appalachian Heritage Festival Special Event. Attendance slips provided.

Sally Rubin is an Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker and editor who has worked in the field for more than 15 years. Her mother is from Calderwood, Tennessee, a hollow in the Smoky mountains. Now a full-time documentary professor at Chapman University and a graduate of the M.A. program in Documentary at Stanford, she grew up visiting Appalachia and has been spending time with family and friends in the region for many years. The film examines the iconic hillbilly stereotype over a century of media representation of mountain and rural people, urging a rethinking of how the country often sees poor, white, rural America.
