Psychology/Animal Studies Colloquium: Helping Animals in Appalachia

Speakers:
Diane Parrish: Founder of Making a Difference Now (MADN): MADN is a Lexington-based nonprofit animal welfare organization that addresses animal welfare issues, with a special focus on pet overpopulation

Dave Cooper: Program Coordinator of Animal Rescue in Appalachia (part of the Kentucky Dog Project)

Description:
As the coal-based economy in eastern Kentucky declines, petty crime has increased, and many people have acquired guard dogs to protect their belongings. This presentation will focus on the treatment of these animals and the animal over-population issues in the coalfields. A new program designed to help chained backyard dogs in Appalachia will be presented along with other solutions that can relieve animal suffering.
