MATH/STATISTICS COFFEE TIME: Derivative of a Solution to a Third Order Boundary Value
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics will hold its last Coffee Time talk of the semester with Dr. Jeffrey Lyons of The Citadel, who will present "Derivative of a Solution to a Third Order Boundary Problem."
Under certain conditions, the solution to the third order boundary value problem consisting of the differential equation y’’’ = f (x, y, y’, y’’) and boundary conditions y(x_1) = y_1, y(x_2) = y_2, y(x_3) = y_3 may be differentiated with respect to the boundary points and values. The resulting function solves the associated variational equation. This work extends that which has been attributed to Peano for initial value problems to boundary value problems. The proof of the main result ties together topics from calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra. You do not have to be an expert in these areas to follow along.
