We will be hosting Dr. Tommy Shavers, former captain of the University of Central Florida's football team before suffering career ending, and ultimately live changing, concussions. He has since devoted his life towards advocating for the wellness of all athletes and is currently doing phenomenal research regarding traumatic brain injures (TBIs) and concussions with collegiate football leaders and the NFL. He’ll be sharing his personal road to recovery with us all. Following, we'll have a candid discussion with coaches from high school, collegiate, and professional levels, former student athletes, academic advisers to athletes, sports psychologists, and counselors to talk about how mental health issues affect the black male student-athlete. Factoring in race, notions of masculinity in athletics, and stigma of mental health issues, there is a ton of material for our panelists to cover.
