Heimlich Maneuver for Choking
The universal sign for choking is when someone places their hands around the neck. Other signs include: a distressed look, red face and an inability to talk. If the person is coughing, they should be able to remove the blockage themselves and encourage them to do so. If they are not coughing and appear to have a completely blocked airway take these steps.
- Call 911
- Position yourself behind them, wrap your arms around the waist just slightly above the navel and quickly pull inward and upward firmly to thrust the blockage out.
- Never do a finger sweep for removal unless you can see the object.
- You may also deliver back blows by striking the person with your palm firmly between the shoulder blades in an upward motion.
- Deliver each of these in a cycle of five back blows and five abdominal thrusts to clear the blockage.
