The Instructional Design Center (IDC) invites you today to attend a session that will focus on common sense approaches to student engagement within the realm of online learning. Dr. Ryan Baggett, associate professor of homeland security, and Mikah Pritchard of IDC will take a look at different strategies and technologies for promoting engagement through announcements, discussion boards, grading feedback and more. The approach to engagement is to work smarter, not harder when building rapport and creating a sense of community within your online course.

This session will review metacognitive reading strategies that can be applied to textbook reading and provide practical approaches to course design that will help students read with purpose, retain information, and learn from textbooks more independently. Instructors are encouraged to attend the Developing Critical Readers through Metacognitive Strategies workshop prior to this session, but it can be taken on its own.

"I Come From" is a documentary that looks at incarcerated poets and playwrights who use the power of creativity to change their lives.

Director Robby Henson will attend and participate in a Q&A following the screening. John Fitch and Chad Cogdill, Department of Communication film concentration faculty, will moderate.

This film focuses on six incarcerated artists and came about through Henson's participation in "Voices Inside," a prison performance and writing workshop at Northpoint Training Center and other institutions in Kentucky. Incarcerated writers in the program have won national awards and their works have been performed at Louisville Actors Theater and New York City theaters.

Beginner, intermediate and advanced participants are welcome. Instruction will be individualized. Members of the class are asked to come to the first class meeting with one specific watercolor skill they wish to improve. For example, beginners may need to develop color mixing, shape description, brush handling, etc. Participants who are unsure of a specific watercolor skill in need of development should bring previous paintings for analysis. The goal of this class is to perfect the skills that underlie personal expression and creativity in the use of watercolor. Participants should bring their existing painting supplies. Class will meet Monday-Friday, Sept. 25-29.
