Internationally recognized physicist Sylvester James Gates Jr. will present a Chautauqua keynote address for Celebration of Science and Mathematics Week titled "Einstein v. Roberts: Does Diversity Matter in Science?", tonight, Thursday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in O'Donnell Hall of the Whitlock Building.

The event is free and open to the public. Attendance slips will be provided for students.

Currently the Ford Foundation Professor of Physics at Brown University, Dr. Gates is one of the most distinguished scientists in America. A pioneer in the fields of supersymmetry, supergravity and superstring theory, Gates is the author of "Superspace," the first major book on the subject, as well as "Superstring Theory: the DNA of Reality." He has served on the President's Council on Science & Technology, was awarded the National Medal of Science in 2013, and was named "Scientist of the Year" by the Harvard Foundation in 2014.

The Dizney Lot will close at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14, and remain closed on Friday, Sept. 15, to accommodate visitors and guests who will attend the dedication ceremony for Phase II of the Science Building. Guests will include several local and state elected officials and representatives. Employees who regularly park in the Dizney Lot will need to park elsewhere. Suggestions for alternative parking locations include Upper Commonwealth and Alumni Coliseum lots. Employee parking permits will be honored in commuter spaces in the AC lot that day.

The Instructional Design Center’s updated “PD1 - Essentials of Online Courses” online course is open and accepting enrollments. This is a self-paced course appropriate for anyone who is preparing to teach online and who wants to learn the tools and functionality of EKU’s Blackboard learning management system. Some previews of the new Blackboard SaaS will also be demonstrated.

PD1 is a comprehensive, fully online course that consists of a series of interactive tutorials on how to create and use various Blackboard tools and functions. Topics include early course logistics, course content and assessment creation, course communication and grading. The time commitment for completing this course is 6-10 hours. The course will conclude on Dec. 10.

Note: this is a foundational, Blackboard technology class that is a precursor to the IDC’s eight-week Online Course Development and Teaching Certificate Program (PD2).

The Madison County Farmers Market is at Irvine McDowell Park today. Enjoy the walk over for fresh fall veggies.
