MATH/STATISTICS COFFEE TIME: Piecing Together Transformational Geometry Through Quilt Squares

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics will hold its last Coffee Time event of 2021-2022 at 2:00 p.m. on 4/26 with Dr. Rachel Bishop-Ross and Dr. Jamie-Marie Miller, who will present "Piecing Together Transformational Geometry Through Quilt Squares."

In this talk, we describe a project that we used to support the students of EME 301 and MAE 302: Mathematical Concepts III in their understanding of geometric shapes and symmetry within the context of how different cultures influence the use of these geometric topics in items like blankets, rugs, and quilts. After the unit on symmetry, students wrote a reflection and created a quilt square that demonstrated their understanding of symmetry. We will compare results from pre- and post-tests and share the results of the tests and the project.

Coffee and cookies will be provided.

Email Lisa.Kay@eku.edu for Zoom information.

Event Date: April 26  2:00 p.m.  Location: Wallace 349 & Online  Cost: Free
