Black History and First Amendment Keynote Eric Deggans is Media/TV Critic for NPR, MSNBC/NBC News analyst and author of _Race-Baiter: How the Media Wields Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation_, a look at how prejudice, racism and sexism fuels some elements of modern media. Deggans has won reporting and writing awards from the Society for Features Journalism, American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors, the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists, The Florida Press Club and the Florida Society of News Editors. According to Harvard professor, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., “No one breaks down the complexity of race, media and popular culture more cogently than Eric Deggans.”

Affirm is a collaborative group working toward acceptance through education and open discussion toward LGBTQ+ life experiences. This is a virtual therapy group through the EKU Psychology Clinic, is conducted by EKU Clinical Psychology doctoral students, and hosted through Zoom. Join Veterans Studies professors and students interested in issues impacting military communities for a talk with Benton Shirey, EKU's Director of Corporate Educational Partnerships. Benton was as a Corpsman in the U.S. Navy from 1983-1987. He served all over the world in hospitals, clinics, and shipboard in medical support of both sailors and Marines. His duty stations included Balboa Naval Hospital, the Naval Hospital in Memphis, and Camp Lejune. Veterans Studies is heavily focused on transitions -- helping the public understand the move from civilian life to military service and back again. Benton Shirey has worked with young adults for 17 years at EKU and is an expert on the topic. This presentation would be beneficial to students in any major. All are welcome! Being isolated in quarantine can lead to spending a lot of time on various activities that take your attention away from the present moment. Practicing mindfulness can be a great opportunity to improve your mental health by challenging yourself to be present and aware of your thoughts and feelings. In this workshop, you will learn tools that can help you practice mindfulness and work towards reducing and preventing stress, anxiety, depression, as well as many other concerns you may be experiencing.
