Women’s History and Celebration of Science and Mathematics Keynote Address

Talithia Williams is professor of mathematics and statistics at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California and the author of the critically praised book, "Power In Numbers: Rebel Women of Mathematics." Williams received her B.S. in Mathematics from Spelman College before earning Master’s degrees in Mathematics from Howard University and in Statistics from Rice University and finally a PhD in Statistics from Rice University. In addition to teaching, her professional experience includes research appointments at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the National Security Agency and NASA. In 2018, she was the host of the 6-part PBS series, NOVA Wonders.

EKU Housing & Residence Life will host an event entitled S.H.O.E.S (Students Honoring Others Everyday Struggles) on April 8, 2021, Lower Powell Plaza from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM. This event is focused on mental health and raising awareness to the struggle’s students face every day. The event will collect pairs of shoes and stories anonymously from faculty, staff, and students about their mental health journey that will be displayed on campus. If you would like to donate any shoes, a collection box will be placed in Whitlock on the first floor and every residence hall until March 26th. If you would like to share a story click on “More on This Announcement” and follow the instructions on the page. Please be on the lookout for more updates about the event. This concept was originally developed and implemented by housing staff at East Carolina University and is being modified to meet the needs of our campus community.

Being isolated in quarantine can lead to spending a lot of time on various activities that take your attention away from the present moment. Practicing mindfulness can be a great opportunity to improve your mental health by challenging yourself to be present and aware of your thoughts and feelings. In this workshop, you will learn tools that can help you practice mindfulness and work towards reducing and preventing stress, anxiety, depression, as well as many other concerns you may be experiencing.

The College of Letters, Arts, & Social Sciences (CLASS) is offering a $500 stipend to a graduating student to present a commencement speech at the Spring 2021 Graduation Ceremony. To be eligible, you must have applied for Spring or Summer 2021 graduation within CLASS.
