The Scholars Week Alumni Spotlight offers the opportunity to hear about academic experiences, success stories, and lessons learned from EKU alumni. The 2021 Alumni Spotlight, co-sponsored by the EKU International Alumni Association, features Dr. Derrick J. Morton, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine. Though biology was not originally in his plans, an incredibly bright mind and mentorship from EKU faculty helped Derrick Morton find his path. Named as one of the ‘100 inspiring black scientists in America’ and a ‘rising star in the biomedical world’ Dr. Morton is committed to his profession and paving the way for underrepresented students in the STEM disciplines. Pathfinders is an affirming weekly support group for students who are first generation college students. At EKU, a student is considered "first gen" if they are the first in their family to attend a four-year university or if neither of their parents/guardians have completed a bachelor’s degree. Some first gen students may have older siblings who have attended college. This virtual group is provided by the EKU Counseling Center and is hosted through a secure video platform. Please join us for the Library's upcoming Speaking from the Margins event, in which EKU students that grew up under the administration of a Black United States President share their thoughts on how they are sometimes perceived and how they rise up to be recognized, to be included and to be valued. Students reflect on why Black Lives Matter is more than a tag line and how they show up to reconcile and heal from oppressive situations. Ron Jackson, Director of the Center for Inclusive Excellence and Global Engagement will moderate this panel discussion.
