The Statistics Club/Mu Sigma Rho and Sports Analytics Club will host a presentation by EKU alum Eric Rannenberg: "Airplanes, Horses, and Hunting Terrorists: Conventional Wisdom Is So Often Wrong." Every day we are bombarded by opinions about how to look, how to act, and what to believe. We are told opinions that are masked as truth and conventional wisdom which adds noise to the signal. As a Data Scientist, Rannenberg has spent the past 18 years asking, “why?” Along the way, he discovered that assumed truths are not always what we were led to believe. The speaker will discuss examples related to techniques taught to military pilots, the role of physics and machine learning in making it harder for aircraft manufacturers to hide “donuts”; the connection between ranking players in video games and picking a winning racehorse, and terrorists. Email lisa.kay@eku.edu for Zoom information.
