The Department of Mathematics & Statistics will hold its first Coffee Time event of the semester with Todd Burus of the UK Markey Cancer Center Community Impact Office, who will present "Quantifying Cancer Burden, Relevant Risk Factors, and Prevention in Kentucky."
Kentucky currently has the highest rates of cancer incidence and mortality among all 50 US states. Why is this and what can we do about it? To get a handle on these questions, Markey Cancer Center’s Community Impact Office is preparing a statewide cancer needs assessment which will help inform the plans of researchers, policy makers and those involved in community-level interventions. This talk will provide an inside look at how the initial phases of the process have unfolded—from the collection of data, to its preparation, and how it gets placed into meaningful visualizations.

Would you know what to do during a community-wide chemical emergency?
Madison County, KYEM, and FEMA, will conduct a limited exercise tomorrow about 9AM. Exercise play will focus on the Emergency Operations Center in Madison County.
EKU normally participates by running an on-campus Incident Command Center, asking our people at Model Laboratory School and Burrier Child Development Center to practice sheltering in place, and offering a voluntary shelter in place drill for the rest of the Richmond Campus community. Considering the current public health recommendations, and out of an abundance of caution, EKU will not participate in these traditional activities, this year.
September is an excellent month to consider how you might protect yourself from a chemical release:
