The McNair Scholars Program continues to seek talented students. McNair is an extracurricular graduate school preparation program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. McNair scholars aim for doctoral degrees. Selected students begin this fall 2022 semester. Program activities include faculty mentoring, a fall colloquium of workshops, a spring research class, a paid summer research internship, presentations at national conferences, graduate admission test preparation, graduate school application support, graduate school application fee waivers, an EKU scholarship, and graduate-level assistantships and fellowships at leading universities. Applicants must be first-generation students from low-income backgrounds and/or Black, Hispanic, American Indian, or Pacific Islander. The Winter SWK 455 Elective provides an overview of the uniqueness of rural communities in relation to human services. We examine the intersectionality of social, environmental, political, and economic issues impacting life in rural areas across the United States. Similarities and differences with urban communities are examined. Students will gain familiarity with the history of rural community development and social issues relevant to rural Kentucky and Central Appalachia. Open to all majors. Asynchronous 6 weeks Dec 5 to Jan 13 with a holiday break. An ofrenda is a memorial setting for loved ones who have passed before us. In Mexico, this tradition comes as a preparation to welcome the souls of the departed who will visit during Dia de los Muertos. In other Latin cultures, memorial settings like ofrendas can be left up all year!

This group is for individuals that have been negatively impacted by growing up in an alcoholic, drug addicted or otherwise unpredictable family environment. Topics often discussed include understanding the impact of these family patterns, learning how to recognize and develop healthy relationships, and addressing negative beliefs about oneself. This is a weekly in-person group provided by the EKU Counseling Center. A group orientation is required to join this group. Join the staff of the EKU Counseling Center today for a workshop on Mindfulness. Being isolated in quarantine can lead to spending a lot of time on various activities that take your attention away from the present moment. Practicing mindfulness can be a great opportunity to improve your mental health by challenging yourself to be present and aware of your thoughts and feelings. In this workshop, you will learn tools that can help you practice mindfulness and work towards reducing and preventing stress, anxiety, depression, as well as many other concerns you may be experiencing.
