EKU Chautauqua Presents: William H. Turner
“The Harlan Renaissance”

***Keynote Address for National Black History Month*** William H. Turner is a sociologist and anthropologist and the author of the acclaimed book. The Harlan Renaissance: A Memoir of Black Life in Appalachian Coal Towns, winner of the Weatherford Award for Nonfiction. Turner, the fifth of ten children, was born in 1946 in the coal town of Lynch, Kentucky, in Harlan County. His grandfathers, his father, four uncles and an older brother were coal miners. After completing a sociology degree at the University of Kentucky, Bill Turner went on to earn a Masters in Sociology and the PhD in Sociology and Anthropology from Notre Dame University, before pursuing post-doctoral studies at both the University of Pennsylvania and Duke University.

The basketball courts will be closed from 2pm-11pm today due to the Welcome Back Bash. Students are encouraged to attend. There will be a VR coaster, skating rink, mechanical bull, winter treats and more.

EKU Center for Student Parents and Colonels with Kids is a drop off location for the Wrapped in Love Blanket Drive. You can drop off NEW blankets at the Turley House anytime before February 17. This project is a collaboration with StepStone Family & Youth Services and all blankets will benefit the youth in foster homes through this agency.
In Kentucky, there are over 9,000 youth in foster care. Often times when children come into foster care, they come with little to no clothing, personal items or items of comfort. The Wrapped in Love project will provide a new blanket to each child entering into the program. These blankets provide foster children with a small amount of comfort and security during a difficult time in their life.

There will be a raffle for a couple of gift cards for those that just attend the meeting. We will be having a Kahoot to do with Environmental Health Science and will go over some club related information as well!

Integrate to Regulate is a group designed to promote healing for trauma survivors. This group incorporates specific, concrete skills combined with expressive arts to support the process of trauma integration. This is a weekly group provided by the EKU Counseling Center. Start from Now is a group to support those dealing with body image issues and/or disordered eating patterns through a blend of education and discussion. This is a weekly group provided by the EKU Counseling Center. A group orientation is required to join this group. Silent Coffee is a time for students, members of the Deaf community, and anyone interested in American Sign Language (ASL) to come together and practice ASL while building relationships and hanging out. Silent Coffee is a voice off event, however we encourage people with ANY level of proficiency in ASL to join us!

Join the staff of the EKU Counseling Center today for a workshop on Mindfulness. Being isolated in quarantine can lead to spending a lot of time on various activities that take your attention away from the present moment. Practicing mindfulness can be a great opportunity to improve your mental health by challenging yourself to be present and aware of your thoughts and feelings. In this workshop, you will learn tools that can help you practice mindfulness and work towards reducing and preventing stress, anxiety, depression, as well as many other concerns you may be experiencing.
