CHAUTAUQUA First Amendment Week Keynote by Dr. Michael Waltman Examines Hate Speech in America

We live in an increasingly polarized society, sometimes with tragic consequences.

Dr. Michael Waltman will discuss the need to confront that reality openly and honestly in order to change it at his Chautauqua First Amendment Week Keynote Lecture, "What If We Had a Real Conversation about Hate in America?" Thurs. Mar. 3, 7:30 PM in O’Donnell Hall. Free and open to the public. Attendance slips provided.

Waltman is associate professor of Communication at UNC Chapel Hill. His research into the social and political uses of hate speech and the essential features of anti-hate discourse has led to the publication of two recent books, Hate on the Right: Right-Wing Political Groups and Hate Speech, and The Communication of Hate, which won a Choice Award from the Association for College & Research Libraries and the Franklyn S. Haiman Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Freedom of Expression.
