The Politics of Race and Beauty in Charleston, SC (Philosophy and Religion Series)

Join us on Zoom on Nov. 11 for the final roundtable of the semester. Led by Dr. Todd Hartch (EKU Professor of History): In the 1960s, Charleston, South Carolina was full of aging, decrepit buildings and failing businesses, while its African American residents endured prejudice and discrimination. Fifty years later, it was voted the top tourist destination in the United States and it boasted a long line of elected and appointed African American officials. Although 2020 has soured many Americans on politics, the story of Charleston shows that positive and transformative political action is possible. Specifically, Mayor Joe Riley’s emphasis on justice and beauty made his city into a better place.

EKU Philosophy and Religious Studies Roundtable Discussions are open to all EKU students, faculty, staff, and friends.
