EKU Chautauqua presents filmmaker Sally Rubin: "Hillbilly*, the Documentary: 100 Years of Appalachia in TV and Film," tonight, Thurs. Oct. 5 at 7:30 PM in O'Donnell Hall, in an Appalachian Heritage Festival Special Event. Attendance slips provided. Sally Rubin is an Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker and editor who has worked in the field for more than 15 years. Her mother is from Calderwood, Tennessee, a hollow in the Smoky mountains. Now a full-time documentary professor at Chapman University and a graduate of the M.A. program in Documentary at Stanford, she grew up visiting Appalachia and has been spending time with family and friends in the region for many years. The film examines the iconic hillbilly stereotype over a century of media representation of mountain and rural people, urging a rethinking of how the country often sees poor, white, rural America.

Come out and show your Colonel Pride at Fan Jam. There will be free food, games and prizes starting at 6:00pm and a chance to meet the football team and staff. The free concert will start at 7:00 pm. This is a great chance to cheer on your football team as they prepare to take on Tennessee State University at home, Saturday October 7th at 6:00pm.

Entrepreneurial farmer and EKU APP faculty Robin Richmond Mason is bringing economic and environmental restoration to mountaintop removal sites in eastern Kentucky with kenaf—a cousin of okra, hemp, and cotton with potential as a major biofuel and fiber crop. Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month by registering to play in our Big Pink Volleyball Tournament. The tournament will be held on October 12th at 7p.m at the Rec Courts. Silent Coffee is a social where we meet in the upstairs room at Purdy's Coffee Co. Here American Sign Language (ASL) is used to communicate and socialize with people who are deaf and hearing. Signers of all levels are encouraged to attend, socialize, and develop their skills!
