Tonight at EKU Chautauqua! Joycelyn Wilson will speak on "The Outkast Imagination: Hip Hop Education and Transformative Pedagogy". Her talk serves as the keynote address for National Black History Month. Educator, speaker, writer, style junkie, and hip-hop scholar Joycelyn Wilson is an Assistant Professor of Black Media Studies and Educational Anthropologist in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication in the Ivan Allen College at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She is an alumni fellow of the Harvard Hip Hop Archive and the Founding Co-Chair of the Hip Hop Theories, Pedagogies, and Praxis Special Interest Group for the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

The EKU Division of Natural Areas is pleased to announce the availability of funding for students, up to $500 plus free lodging, to conduct research at one or more of EKU's natural areas as part of the study: Maywoods Environmental and Educational Laboratory, Lilley Cornett Woods Appalachian Ecological Research Station, and Taylor Fork Ecological Area. Jeff McNeil will give a “Colonel Perspective” on “Life, Love, and Work in China” when he returns to his alma mater, EKU, to speak on Monday, Feb. 19. McNeil’s talk, at 4 p.m. in the Allen Auditorium (Room 108) of the Crabbe Main Library, is presented by EKU Asian Studies. McNeil, who earned degrees in philosophy and English from EKU in 2008, is the academic principal at Liangfeng International School in China. “I’ll discuss my journey into Asia, the culture shock that I went through, as well as what it’s like to live, love, and work in China,” McNeil said. “I’ll reflect on Chinese culture as I’ve grown to understand it, reverse culture shock each time I returned to the U.S., and how I’ve grown as a professional and as a person.” EKU Asian Studies offers a minor (18 credits) and a certificate (12 credits). Looking for a 3-hour partial semester course?!?! Check out REC 300 while there are still spots available for Spring 2018! Course Information: REC 300 Civic Engagement Experiences (3).
Prerequisite: Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing.
Students will engage in structured civic engagement activities by completing community projects. Students will work as a group toward enhancing the local environment or community. This course blends an ongoing academic focus with experiential learning and service experiences. May be retaken to a maximum of six credit hours.
